Gelsenkirchen

The ride to Gelsenkirchen was quick–very quick, as we virtually soared down the autobahn at speeds I have never experienced in a car. Those who know me well tend to offer me the wheel as I am not a relaxed passenger and have been known to offer suggestions on how they might operate the vehicle. When the speedometer exceeded 190K and edged 200K I found it difficult to carry on the conversation with the driver (or say anything much at all) as I did not want to distract him. We would fly down the road, zoom up to the back end of a car, and either slow very very quickly, or the car would move to the right and we would continue our flight. (Bert et al, do NOT get any ideas about speeding up when I returnhome as a means to keep me quiet!!)

The RC of Gelsenkirchen-Mitte organized a lovely welcome BBQ where we feasted on German sausages and various kebabs, enjoyed beverages and getting to know our new hosts and their families. After the dinner the team and I were taught a great lawn game–Viking Chess. We enjoyed the game so much that I have recorded the rules and taken measurements for the game pieces (new project for you Bert!).

Lindsey & I met our fabulous hosts, Peter and Carmen Pohl. We are staying in our own small apartment down a few flights from their place. Last night they took us to meet Ditmar & Regina Klien, master book binders who shared their craft with us and even tried to teach us various aspects. We enjoyed a lovely evening learning about them and their Germany.
