Kontrast Communications Services

On Wednesday, June 6 I had a full day with Kontrast Communication Services. This is a company based in Dusseldorf that has 145 employees and has been operating since 1991. They are an all-inclusive Communications company offering everything from advertising, copywriting, web design, app design, to the basic fundamentals like logistics and database management. I was truly in awe by some of the employees abilities – they are doing amazing things! A huge thank you to Martin Tukmantel, head of HR, for organizing my tours on this day. Throughout the day I was able to meet with their OBI team, Business Development, New Media Technologies, and the Creative Floor.
Nadine and Silke were my hosts in the morning. I learned about their work with OBI (comparable to Home Depot in America) which has 400 stores in Germany. They have developed a system to produce over 90 brochures or newspaper inserts each year. I know from experience that these inserts in your Sunday paper may not look like much, and sometimes end up in the recycle bin, but there is a huge amount of work that goes into each of those. Not only do they handle the basic layout and design of these weekly inserts, they also do all of the photo shoots and database management for all of the items pricing and sale priority. As you may imagine they have to work a few months or seasons in advance to get these all produced. Their team consists of account managers, layout designers and photoshop experts. Because this client has a lot of work they have an entire team devoted to just this one client.
Silke is completing her internship with Kontrast as a part of her education (similar to a technical school) but this internship lasts 3 years! She shed some light on the education system in Germany, which is so drastically different from ours that I’ve had a hard time understanding it. Both Silke and Nadine were very informative and so happy with their jobs, its hard to not get excited about creative projects when everyone around you is happy to be there. They really have a great work environment.
Next I met with Christian and Michael in Business Development. They work to bring in new clients and offer problem solving for company’s communication or marketing ideas. They work with some great technology including iphone and ipad apps offering 3d “augmented reality” of products. For example, scan an ad in a magazine with your phone and the product pops up 3D on your screen. You can spin, flip it over, and zoom all by moving your mobile device. Really amazing technology. (OBI 3D Finder)
Michael showed me some work he has done using the Kinect system. They have been able to create interactive point of sale technology using the kinect to include things like games using the product or simply flipping through a magazine from a store front window. They have used this technology for clients like Listerine and VodaPhone.
Cathrin and Simone showed me their creative floor where they handle the majority of Kontrast’s clients including print, web, and app design. They have a great book that they worked on “Little Pirate” (check your app store – available in english soon) where you can choose the character’s gender, looks, and name to be inserted into the story. Super cute book and they had way too much fun with all of the sound efffects 🙂 I also saw some catalogs that they’ve produced and web items like short instructional videos, banner ads, and flash sites.
Kontrast was a great view into a full-service Communications agency. I learned a lot and am still sorting through all the notes I took on my tour. Another thank you to CEO Rolf Korner for inviting me to lunch. I truly enjoyed it. They were very informative and overall I was most impressed with how great their workflow is – what better way to offer Communication strategies than when you have amazing internal Communications already in practice within the organization!

Again, it appears that your German hosts have been right on the ball with their organization of vocational days. Excellent.
